Top tips for those taking PrEP

PrEP is safe, highly effective, and easy to manage once you get into the swing of it. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Choose the Dosing Schedule that works for you

Daily PrEP is recommended for most people and offers full protection with consistent use.

On-demand PrEP (also called 'event-based dosing') involves taking doses around the time of sex and can also be effective for HIV prevention. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist to talk you through how it works - timing is key.

• Stay on top of your check-ins

You'll need a HIV test and kidney fucntion test every 3 months while on PrEP.

These check-ups also help monitor for STIs and keep everything running smoothly. Some clinics offer bulk-billed testing, and we can help point you to one nearby if you need.

• Take it as prescribed

For daily PrEP: aim to take it at the same time every day. It's also recommended to be taken with food.

Missed a dose? Don't panic! Just take it as soon as you remember. Chat to a pharmacist or prescriber if you're unsure of what to do.

• Side effects are usually mild (if any)

Some people get minor side effects (like headache or upset stomach) in the first few weeks, but these usually settle quickly.
